MSA TEST Flashcards
what are the 4 pre-installation requirement for bolt/screw
- bolt length should be chosen such that grip length is same thickness as materials joined
- nut must never be screwed down against the last thread on bolt
3.If there is no washer like bearing surface , washer placed under head
4.if grip length is too long, use plain washers to act as shims to prevent nut reaching last thread
- IF NOT SPECIFIED IN MANUAL, bolt should be installed with the head upwards, forwards or inboard to prevent bolt from falling out if nut not secured
What are the 2 basic visual aid tools required for visual inspection tasks?
- Flashlights: suitable for industrial use. Safety approved by underwriters laboratory or equivalent agency as suitable for use in hazardous atmosphers such as fuel tanks
- Inspection mirror: view an area not in normal line of sight, but must be free of dirt , cracks and worn coating. Swivel joint tight enough to maintain setting
What are 2 methods to determine air leaks?
- Sound: hearing for hissing sound
- Bubble test
Name 4 types of inspection on electrical connectors?
- Bent pins
- Misaligned pins
- Corroded contacts
- Loose connections
How to identify grip length of bolt and screw?
Grip length is the distance from underhead bearing surface to beginning of bevel just prior to threads
Screws with no countersink to screw or is a brass screw designed for electrical use or electrical heads: BODY OF SCREW
Countersunk screws: BEVELED PORTION OF THE HEAD OF THE SCREW
How to identify a self-locking nut and non-locking nut?
- need no auxiliary means of safety but have a safety feature included as integral part of construction
- Self locking nuts have nylok inserts known as Nylok. Nylok forms around the screw threads and prevents nut from loosening.
MS20365 low temp self locking nuts used on bolts or machine screws are prevented from vibrating loose by elastic start
What are the 4 pre-installation checks on o-rings?
- ensure that they are free from all contamination
- Removed from sealed package and inspected for defects such as blemishes, abrasions, cuts or punctures
- Look out for slight surface flaws by using magnifying glass if required with adequate lighting
- Roll the ring on inspection cone or dowel, inner diameter surface checked for small cracks, particles of foreign material that cause leakage or shorten life of o-ring
- slightly stretch o-ring when rolled inside out to reveal defects not visible
5a. avoid using sharp edged or pointed tools that cause scratching or marring of hydraulic component surface - immmerse the o-ring in clean hydraulic fluid
what is the function of a gasket with a function of its usage on an ACE equipment.
- Gaskets are static seals between 2 flat surfaces. - -
- Abestos sheeting is used whenever heat resistant gasket requred.
- Copper washer used for spark plug gasket where it is essential to have a non-compressible soft gasket.
- Cork gasket used for oil seal between engine crankcase and accessories and capable of occupying uneven or varying space caused by rough surface, expansion or contraction
- rubber sheeting used for compressible gasket but cannot come in contact with gasoline or oil due to deterioration
use:
- AFL Inset FTO
Name 4 rules to follow when use a screwdriver correctly
- Use the right screwdriver for the right job or else damages screw
- Ensure that the blade or tip of screwdriver is a snug fit in screw slot or recess with no side play. Clean slot before engaging screwdriver
- Avoid using screwdriver with chisel point or substituting screwdriver for chisel
- Never strike handle of screwdriver with metal hammer
- Keep screwdriver upright when turning screw
What is the key selection criteria when choosing ratchet handle drive to break loose bolt?
- Breakaway torque: rotating force required to break fastener loose. Breakaway torque> original tightening torque as dynamic torque lower than static
- Determine amount of torque required for particular application
1/4- 28 ft-lbs
3/8- 80 ft-lbs
1/2- 285 ft-lbs
3/4- 710 ft-lbs
1- 1170 ft-lbs
1-1/2- 1920 ft lbs
What is the difference between continuity and resistance check?
Continuity: 2 points of circuit to see if there’s current flow
Resistance: check integrity of insulation/condition of cable/wire between 2 points
What is the main purpose of clamp meter?
- measure current in a circuit without disconnecting it
- jaws of clamp meter do not need to touch conductor during measurement
- measure residual current
What is the difference between lockout and tagout?
Lockout: placement of secured lockout device on energy isolating device so that energy isolating device and equipment being controlled cannot be operated until lockout device removed
Tagout: placement of prominent warning tags on energy isolating devices to indicate energy isolating device and equipment being controlled cannot be operated until lockout device removed
What are 2 applications where lockout and tagout are used?
- Unexpected powering or start-up of machinery or equipment
- Release of hazardous energy during service or maintenance
What is the definition of Force,Pressure and Area?
What is the relationship with each other
Force: push or pull on an object
Area:
the total space taken up by a flat (2-D) surface or shape of an object
Pressure: force applied per unit area
Pressure=F/A
