MS2 - Implantology Important points to remember Flashcards
What is the required distance between implant and natural tooth structure?
1.5mm
How much distance is required between the top of the implant and top of the soft tissue?
4mm
How deep should an implant be placed and why?
3-4mm → to avoid invading biologic width (SCAT)
(Dr Finn said 3mm, Dr Tulio said 4mm)
What are the types of bone grafts available and where are they derived?
- Autologous graft → Host’s own tissue
- Allograft → Another human’s tissue
- Xenograft → derived from animal tissue (bovine, porcine, equine)
- Alloplast → synthetic inorganic material
describe Siebert’s classification of edentulous space
Class I - Loss of B-L width
Class II - Loss of A-C height
Class III - Loss of B-L width and A-C height
how much distance is required between implants?
3mm
how much buccal bone is required around an implant?
2mm
What type of implant connector is this?
External Connector
What type of implant connector is this?
Internal Connector
Which type of bone (D1-D4) is most ideal for implant placement and why?
D2 and D3 - adequate amount of cortical bone as well as cancellous bone for good stability and healing
What are the general types of membranes available for GBR? (3)
- Natural polymer
- Synthetic Polymer
- Metal
What are 2 important anatomical structures to always consider when planning for implants?
- IAN
- Maxillary sinus
What diagnostic tools do you need when planning for implants?
- OPG and CBCT - radiographically assess amount of bone, features/quality of bone and relation to other teeth/structures
- Diagnostic Models - examine occlusion for aberrant tooth movement or over-eruption → diagnostic models good for demonstrating to the pt
What do you need to do during/prior to implant placement if a composite defect is present in the area?
osseous or soft-tissue composite defect needs to be reconstructed during or prior to implant placement
Describe how an anterior implant is positioned vs how a posterior implant is positioned and why.
Anterior → Anterior ridge of implant shoulder placed 1mm palatal to point of emergence of adjacent teeth -aims for 2mm thickness of buccal bone
Posterior → implant should be placed at the centre of the future restoration - allowing for 1.5mm bone thickness on buccal and palatal/lingual
