ASIS superior, PSIS inferior, Groin/Medial Knee Pain
Posterior Innominate Rotation
Posterior Ilium Rotator Muscles (6)
Glute Maximus Semitendinosus Biceps Femoris Semimembranosis Piriformis External Oblique
Dorsiflex foot, which way does the fibular head move?
Anteriorly
Plantar flex foot.. which way does the fibular head move?
Posteriorly
Quadratus Lumborum O & I
Function?
O: Iliac Crest and Iliolumbar Ligament
I: 12th rib, iliac crest and transverse processes of L1-4
Stabilize diaphragm origin, functions in respirations
Piriformis O & I
O: L1-4(5)
I: Lesser trochanter (medial side of the femur)
Innervation of Quadratus Lumborum?
T12 - L3
Symptoms of quadratus lumborum spasm?
LBP, Referred pain to hip and groin, exhalation 12th rib dysfunction, diaphragm restriction,
Note: must differentiate from renal disease
What is the key somatic dysfunction/ lesion in the event of a psoas syndrome?
a non-neutral dysfunction at L1 or L2
Psoas innervation?
L2/3
Physiology of a tight psoas?
Often seen in people who sit a lot, intrafusal fibers of the spindle tighten/shorten to better monitor the relaxed fibers of the psoas muscle A rapid return to neutral length can produce confusion and send muscle into spasm
Dx/ and treatment for chronic psoas shortening?
Dx/ Thomas Test
Tx/ Stretch it
Name the man who is credited for first using muscle energy techniques?
Fred L. Mitchell
What type of treatment is muscle energy?
Direct and Active
What is the definition of respiratory assistance?
Physician directs forces of respiration which simultaneously using a fulcrum (hand) to direct the somatic dysfunction through the barrier
What is post-isometric relaxation?
immediately following an isometric contraction the neuromuscular apparatus is in a refractory state; during which a passivre stretch may be performed without encountering myotactic reflex opposition
what is it in the muscle that causes post isometric lengthening?
golgi tendon organ
What is reciprocal inhibition?
Contraction of a muscle used to relax the antagonist group of that muscle
Contraindications of muscle energy?
Fracture, dislocation, or severe joint instability
Uncooperative patient
Moderate to severe muscle strains
Advanced osteoporosis
Severe Illness - e.g post surg, ICU for MI
