Ms Burris Flashcards
Plant cell
A form of eukaryote cell that has chloroplasts and a grid cell wall
Animal cell
A form of a eukaryote cell that is distinct from plant cells in that it it does not have a rigid cell wall
Organelle
A tiny structure within a cell that performs a specific function for that cell
Cell membrane
The boundary that surrounds a cell and controls which substances can enter or leave the cell
Cell wall
A stiff structure that surrounds and protects a cell found in plant, fungus and some bacteria cells
Cytoplasm
The liquid in the inside of a living cell
Mitochondria
An organelle in eukaryotic cells that is the site of cellular respiration and generates most of the cells ATP
Golgi apparatus
Organelle in eukaryotic cells that stores and modifies proteins for specific functions and prepares them for transport to other part of the cell
Endoplasmic reticulum
A network of tubular membranes within the cytoplasm of the cell occurring either with a smooth surface or studded with ribosomes involved in the transport of materials
Ribosomes
A tiny somewhat mitten-shaped organelle that manufactures proteins
Centrioles
A cylindrical organelle near the nucleus in animal cells occurring in pairs and involved in the development of spindle fibers in cell division
Chloroplast
An organelle in a plant cell that turns energy from the sun into chemical energy for the plant to use
Vesicle
bubble like membrane structure that stores and transports cellular products and digests metabolic wastes within the cell
Vacuole
A tiny cavity in the cytoplasm of a plant cell containing air liquids food and waste products
Nucleus
An organelle in a cell that holds the cells DNA
Nuclear membrane
Sometimes referred to as the nuclear envelope is the membrane that encloses the nucleus
DNA
Found in the nucleus of a cell a long nucleic acid molecule containing the genetic instructions for the development and functioning of all living organisms abbreviation for deoxyribonucleic acid
Lysosome
Organelles that contain digestive enzymes they digest excess or worn out organelles food particles and engulfed viruses or bacteria
Multi-cellular organism
Consisting of many cells
Unicellular organism
An organism that consists of only one cell
Prokaryote
Individual microscopic organism with no nucleus
Eukaryote
A type of cell with a nucleus enclosed by a membrane as well as membrane enclosed organelles
Cell
The basic unit of all living things
Tissue
A group of cells that works together to carry out a particular task in a organism
Organ
A group of tissues that performs a complex function in a body
Organ system
In a group of organs that work together to perform one or more functions
Organism
Any individual living thing
Circulator system
The system that transports blood and other fluids throughout the body
Execratory system
The system of the body responsible for storing and getting rid of waste products the kidneys bladder and liver are the major organs in the urinary system
Digestive system
A group of organs that break down food and absorb the nutrients which the body then uses for fuel
Respiratory system
The system of the body that brings oxygen into the body and releases carbon dioxide
Muscular system
The body system that permits movement and locomotion in animals the human body has over 600 muscles there are three groups skeletal smooth, and cardiac
Nervous system
The system of the body that carries information to all parts of the body The nervous system relies on nerve cells to move electrical signals to the body from the brain and from the body to the brain and/or spinal cord.
Sensory system
Consists of sensory receptors neural pathways and parts of the brain involved in sensory perception. Commonly recognized sensory systems are those for vision hearing somatic sensation (touch) taste and olfaction (smell)
Skeletal system
The network of solid materials that give an organisms body its structure
Fight or flight system
Response to an acute threat to survival that is marked by physical changes including nervous and endocrine changes that prepare a human or an animal to react or retreat.
