What is MRSA?
Staphylococcus aureus bacteria which is resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics (penicillins/cephalosporins/carbapenems)
How is high risk for MRSA?
Elderly
Nursing home residents
Patients with open wounds or active skin disease
When do people need to be swabbed for MRSA and what sites tend to be swabbed?
When coming in for surgery or treatment
Nasal Groin Open wounds Catheters/PEGs Tracheostomy
What can be done to prevent the spread of MRSA on the ward?
Use of side room Appropriate PPE Hand hygiene Safe handling of clinical waste Environment cleaning Covering lesions Appropriate Abx use
How can an MRSA infection be eradicated?
Chlorhexidine body washes for 5 days
Antibacterial nasal creams 3x day for 5 days
Abx:
- doxycycline
- Clindamycin
- Teicoplanin
- Linezid
What information needs to be included in the discharge of a patient who had MRSA?
Site of MRSA infection
Abx used to treat/eradicate
