Context

Mrs Sisyphus

A

Inspired by the Greek myth of Sisyphus — a king condemned to eternally push a boulder uphill, only for it to roll back down each time — this poem offers a modern, satirical retelling from the perspective of his wife. Rather than admiring his perseverance, she crudely mocks his obsessive devotion to this futile task, portraying it as both ridiculous and selfish. Through sardonic humour and domestic imagery, she highlights how his endless labour has caused emotional distance and led to the collapse of their relationship. The poem becomes a feminist critique of male stubbornness and ego, reimagining myth through the lens of marital frustration and power imbalance.

Q

Comparison and contrast with porphyrias lover

Mrs Sisyphus

A

Critique of male obsession (porphyrias lover with control, and sisyphus with work)
There is a clear power imbalance, with both men dominating in their own ways, but Mrs Sisyphus is given a voice, while Porphyria is silenced

Q

Comparison and contrast with A tocatta of gallupis

A

Both explore the futility of certain human endeavours (sisyphus with his endless task, and venitians with empty pleasures of life)
Duffys poem is domestic and embodied, while Brownings is philosophical and imagined. (futility observed from firsthand vs afar)

Q

Comparison and Contrast with my last dutchess

A

frustration and emotional isolation, jealousy causes emotional isolation in my last dutchess, and obsession is the root in mrs sisyphus
Vs Mld- the duchess is silenced, and we cannot grasp her reactions, while we can openly observe Mrs Sisyphus’s reactions
