Critical Race Theory (CRT):
An academic framework that examines the intersection of race, law, and power, highlighting the systemic nature of racism.
Microaggression:
A subtle, often unintentional act of discrimination against a member of a marginalized group.
Institutional Racism:
Policies and practices within organizations that systematically disadvantage non-dominant racial groups.
Eurocentrism:
A worldview that centers European culture and values, often at the expense of other cultures.
Decolonization of the Curriculum:
The process of challenging and revising educational materials to incorporate diverse perspectives and dismantle Eurocentric biases.
Tokenism:
The practice of making only a perfunctory or symbolic effort to be inclusive to members of minority groups.
Overt Racism:
Explicit and intentional expressions of prejudice and discrimination based on race.
Inferential Racism:
Racism expressed through subtle language, imagery, and unquestioned assumptions.
Intersectionality:
The interconnectedness of various social identities (such as race, gender, class, and sexuality) and the overlapping systems of oppression they experience.
Hegemony:
The dominance of one social group over others, often through cultural and ideological means.
Public Reformism:
Advocacy for public action to support public interest journalism and hold media accountable for promoting social justice.
Citizen Journalism:
News content produced by members of the public, often using digital platforms.
Positive Action:
Measures taken to improve opportunities for underrepresented groups, addressing existing inequalities.
Equality Act 2010:
UK legislation prohibiting discrimination based on protected characteristics, including race.
Direct Discrimination:
Treating someone less favorably explicitly based on a protected characteristic.
