MRI MSK 2 Flashcards
What is the most frequently requested MRI in MSK?
Knee
What sequences are used for Knee MRI?
T1 SE (sag)
- anatomical detail
- meniscal pathology
T2 SE/TSE (axial)
- detection of fluid and pathology
PD Fat sat (sag and cor)
STIR
- Marrow and soft tissue pathologies
- fluid (sites of trauma/ infarction/ effusion)
What knee pathology can be seen on MRI?
- Occult fractures
- Osteochondral injury / degeneration
- Bone bruising
- Meniscal tears and cycts
- Ligament tears / ruptures
- Joint effusion
- Bursitis (pre-patella very common
What ligaments are in the knee?
ACL,
PCL
Medial and lateral collaterals
Extensor mechanism
- Quads tendon
- patella
- patella tendon
- tibial tuberosity
What is the kissing contusions?
During ACL rupture where part of the femur hits the tibia
What is a segond fracture?
An avulsion fracture of the lateral proximal tibia at the attachment of the anterioly tear l ligament
Why are PCL tears more uncommon than ACL?
Requires severe Trauma to impact to tibia or hyperextension to tear the PCL
The PCL is about twice as strong as the ACL
What are the 2 causes of meniscal injuries?
Acute - usually caused by twisting trauma to the knee
Common in younger people
Chronic degenerative - as people get older, meniscus weekends, and wears thin therefore, becoming more prone to tears.
What are some of the types of meniscal tear?
Parrot beak
Horizontal flap
Verticals longitudinal
Horizontal;
Complex tear
Radial tear
Free-edge
Bucket handle
