Mr. Johnson Test Flashcards
What is solar energy?
Solar energy is energy from the sun.
How does solar produce electricity?
Sunlight startles electrons inside cells of solar panels, activating them to start flowing.
Is solar renewable?
Yes, energy is provided by the sun.
What is nuclear energy?
Nuclear energy is energy from the nucleus (core) of an atom.
How does nuclear produce electricity?
Nuclear energy comes from splitting uranium atoms, also called fission. This generates heat ➡️ Steam ➡️ Turbine generator ➡️ Electricity.
Is nuclear renewable?
No. Nuclear energy uses radioactive fuel.
What is geothermal energy?
Geothermal energy is heat produced deep in the earth’s core.
How does geothermal produce electricity?
Hot fluids are drawn from geothermal reservoirs. The fluids produce steam that drives turbines. The turbines generate electricity.
Is geothermal renewable?
Yes, it is renewable because the source is naturally heat generated.
What is wind energy?
Wind energy is harnessed energy through wind turbines.
How does wind produce electricity?
Turbine blades have a shaft that turn a motor to convert kinetic energy to electricity.
Is wind renewable?
Yes, the source is natural and clean.
What is fossil fuels
Fossil fuels is formed by decompressed matter millions of years ago in the form of coal, oil, or natural gas.
How do fossil fuels produce electricity?
Coal, compressed oil, or natural gas is burned to produce steam. The steam runs a turbine, and the turbine generates electricity.
Are fossil fuels renewable?
No, it is unstistainable.
