“Clothes means something quite didferent to women, not only something to make em look prettier
Sexist about clothing towards women
“Em” - hes objectifies women
Quotes to show hes s capitalist
He sees his daigjters engagment as a chance to push for “lower costs and higher prices” - shows hes greedy
Does not consider the impact “higher prices” might have on anyone else
“The titanic - she sails next week and unsinkable, absouletly unsinkable”
Titanic symbolisez his own family how they are untouchable until the inspector arrives are gives them a rude awakening
Dramatic irony - as we know titanic sunk when we are reading and he was confident it wouldnt
Audiance loses trust
Arogance left to downfall.
“It’s my duty to keep labour costs down.”
Priestley uses an oxymoron to show the difference between Mr Birling’ way of “duty” compared to the Inspectors, which could also show the differences between Capitalism and Socialism. Mr Birling wants to do things that will benefit him in life rather than others, he is unreasonable towards his workers because by giving them a raise, it won’t help his business.
The Inspector’s way of “duty” suggests that and it is selfless and the things he does benefits everyone not just himself and this highlights Mr Birling as a man who only cares for himself.
