and complete art form to what it had
been before him.
An opera that was pivotal for its comic
element, for being a German opera and
for being in the vernacular instead of
Italian.

Haydn - The Creation

A

18th Century oratorio, Scored for soprano, tenor and bass soloists, chorus and large Classical orchestra.
Word painting: Music reflects celestial meaning of text. Chorus joins in for moments of ‘Heavens opening’ and angels singing. Chaos reflected with withheld perfect cadences at the end of phrases.
Adam and Eve duet uses popular dance rhythms in the style of Viennese Singspiel. Similar to Papageno and Papagena. Musical style chosen shows how they are the ‘everyman’ and ‘everywoman’

Beethoven - Fidelio

A

Singspiel based on the French Revolution.
Sung in German ( The vernacular).
Beethoven was greatly influenced by Mozart and was inspired by the librettist Schikaneder who wrote the Magic Flute.
‘Jetzt, Alter, jetzt hat es Eile!’ contains many moments of word painting: Humorous moments in the duet reflected with the strings and woodwind dialoguing. ‘Trembling’ strings when he says trembling. Tension rising at the
mention of murder with pulsating quavers in strings.

Orpheus and Eurydice

A

Azione teatrale: an opera on a mythological subject with choruses and dancing.
Gluck attempted to reform the complex plots and music of Baroque opera. Orpheus and Eurydice reconnected the music with the drama and influenced many works that followed, including The Magic Flute.
“Chiamo il mio ben così”, Verses contain stromentato: Voice is accompanied by part or all of the orchestra., instead of the traditional secco recitative, where the voice is only accompanied by the basso continuo.
