moving exam Flashcards
A shallow cylinder of round glass that is used in labs to cultivate
various cells and microorganisms.
petri dish
A large glass with a pouring lip that is specifically used in chemistry
to hold and measure liquids.
Beaker
A ideal size glassware and shape for storing small quantities of
materials, typically liquids, which are then processed in some way, such as by
being set over a Bunsen burner’s flame.
Test Tube
A widely used type of laboratory flask which features
a conical base with a cylindrical neck. The narrow neck prevents the contents from spilling, and the conical shape allows the contents to be swirled
or stirred during an experiment, in titration.
Erlenmeyer Flask
a small, narrow cylindrical shape, with
measurements of the liquid’s volume marked along the cylinder. It is preferred
over flasks and beakers for measurement because it is more precise and
accurate.
graduated cylinder
A graduated glass tube with a tap at one end that is used for
delivering known volumes of a liquid, especially in titrations.
burette
A type of flask having spherical bottom used as laboratory glassware, mostly for chemical or biochemical work. It is commonly
used for distillation, chemical reactions, heating liquid sample, and storage
demands.
round bottom flask
A calibrated glassware to hold a precise volume at a
specific temperature. It is used for precise dilutions and preparation of
standard solutions.
volumetric flask
It is used to evaporate solutions and supernatant
liquid, sometimes to the point of melting.
evaporating dish
Also called “Pasteur pipette”, it is a device used
to transfer small quantities of liquids.
dropper
set to spread media on a petri dish or mix liquids in a
beaker.
Can also be used to separate an emulsion during an
extraction.
stirring rod
Used to connect other pieces of lab equipment. It can be cut,
bent and stretched for a variety of uses. Also used for transferring small
quantities of liquids.
glass tubing
A tube or pipe that is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, used
for guiding liquid into a small opening. It is commonly in filtration set-up.
Funnel
Also known as media bottles, they are used to store
chemicals in liquid or powder form. They are generally made up of glass or
plastic.
reagent bottles
A piece of glass that is circular and concave that is used as a
surface to evaporate liquids, hold solids while they are being weighed, heat a
small amount of substance, and serve as a beaker cover.
