moving exam Flashcards
A shallow cylinder of round glass that is used in labs to cultivate
various cells and microorganisms.
petri dish
A large glass with a pouring lip that is specifically used in chemistry
to hold and measure liquids.
Beaker
A ideal size glassware and shape for storing small quantities of
materials, typically liquids, which are then processed in some way, such as by
being set over a Bunsen burner’s flame.
Test Tube
A widely used type of laboratory flask which features
a conical base with a cylindrical neck. The narrow neck prevents the contents from spilling, and the conical shape allows the contents to be swirled
or stirred during an experiment, in titration.
Erlenmeyer Flask
a small, narrow cylindrical shape, with
measurements of the liquid’s volume marked along the cylinder. It is preferred
over flasks and beakers for measurement because it is more precise and
accurate.
graduated cylinder
A graduated glass tube with a tap at one end that is used for
delivering known volumes of a liquid, especially in titrations.
burette
A type of flask having spherical bottom used as laboratory glassware, mostly for chemical or biochemical work. It is commonly
used for distillation, chemical reactions, heating liquid sample, and storage
demands.
round bottom flask
A calibrated glassware to hold a precise volume at a
specific temperature. It is used for precise dilutions and preparation of
standard solutions.
volumetric flask
It is used to evaporate solutions and supernatant
liquid, sometimes to the point of melting.
evaporating dish
Also called “Pasteur pipette”, it is a device used
to transfer small quantities of liquids.
dropper
set to spread media on a petri dish or mix liquids in a
beaker.
Can also be used to separate an emulsion during an
extraction.
stirring rod
Used to connect other pieces of lab equipment. It can be cut,
bent and stretched for a variety of uses. Also used for transferring small
quantities of liquids.
glass tubing
A tube or pipe that is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, used
for guiding liquid into a small opening. It is commonly in filtration set-up.
Funnel
Also known as media bottles, they are used to store
chemicals in liquid or powder form. They are generally made up of glass or
plastic.
reagent bottles
A piece of glass that is circular and concave that is used as a
surface to evaporate liquids, hold solids while they are being weighed, heat a
small amount of substance, and serve as a beaker cover.
watch glass
A squeeze bottle with a nozzle that is used to rinse different
types of lab glassware, including test tubes and flasks with a flat bottom.
wash bottle
A triangle made of ceramic and wire that is used to hold a
crucible steady while it is heated.
clay triangle
A container in which metals or other substances can
be melted or heated to extremely high temperatures.
porcelain crucible
A set of two tools used to crush and grind solids into
a fine paste or powder.
mortar and pestle
Used in laboratories to enable the testing of numerous
samples. They are produced with numerous wells to ensure that each sample
is separated.
spot test plates
A scissors-like instruments that allow users to grasp hot
crucibles, flasks, evaporating dishes, or even small beakers. However, instead
of having two blades, these instruments have two pincers or pieces of metal
that are concave together.
crucible tong
A tool that aid in transferring materials and samples from one
location to another, including tasks like mixing and scraping.
spatula
It keeps several test tubes in place when it is hot or
should not be touched.
test tube holder
Used to support and fix various instruments, such as beaker
and funnel.
iron stand
A piece of lab equipment made of a metal loop shaped like a
ring that is used to hold various pieces of lab equipment and is typically
incompatible with flat surfaces.
iron ring
A useful iron stand accessory for titration since it can
hold 2 burettes, one with acid and the other base.
butterfly clamp
A sheet of thin metal that has a net-like weave. A stand with
wire gauze is placed between a Bunsen burner and the glassware to be heated.
wire gauze
A laboratory equipment that produces a single open gas
flame and is used for heating, sterilization, and combustion.
bunsen burner
a glass tube is filled with mercury and a standard
temperature scale is marked on the tube. With changes in temperature, the
mercury expands and contracts, and the temperature can be read from the
scale.
