Movements of the Elbow Joint - The Muscles Flashcards
Which movements are permitted by the Elbow Joint?
Flexion and Extension
Which muscles permit flexion of the elbow joint?
Biceps Brachii
Brachialis
Brachioradialis
Name the innervations to the flexors of the elbow joint
Biceps Brachii - musculocutaneous nerve
Brachialis - musculocutaneous nerve and radial nerve
Brachioradialis - radial nerve
Name the origin and insertion of biceps brachii
Origin - long head - supraglenoid tubercle of scapula, short head - coracoid process of scapula
Insertion - both heads - radial tuberosity + fascia of forearm via bicipital aponeurosis
Name the origin and insertion of Brachialis
Origin - medial and lateral surfaces of the humeral shaft
Insertion - ulna tuberosity, distal to the elbow joint
Name the origin and insertion of Brachioradialis
Origin - lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus
Insertion - lateral surface of the distal end of the radius
Which muscles permit extension at the elbow joint?
Triceps brachii
Anconeus
Name the innervations of the extensors of the elbow joint
Triceps brachii - radial nerve
Anconeus - radial nerve
Name the origin and insertions of Triceps Brachii
Origin - long head - infraglenoid tubercle, lateral head - humerus, superior to the radial groove, medial head - humerus, inferior to the radial groove
Insertion - the heads converge to one tendon and insert into the olecranon of the ulna
Name the origin and insertion of Anconeus
Origin - posterior surface of lateral epicondyle of humerus
Insertion- lateral surface of olecranon, and posterior surface of superior part of ulna
Where does pronation and supination occur?
Don’t occur at the elbow, but occur at the radioulnar joints which are nearby
