Movements Flashcards
What movements are allowed at the elbow joint
Flexion/Extension
Describe flexion of elbow
- Plane/axis
- Range + limits
- Muscles
Plane/axis: sagittal plane/frontal axis
Range: 140-150 degrees
limits: soft tissue approximation + tension in triceps
Muscles: Brachialis, Biceps Brachii + Brachioradialis
Describe extension of the elbow
- Plane/axis
- range + limits
- muscles
Plane/axis: sagittal plane/frontal axis
Range: 0 (+ or - 5 degrees)
limits: bony apposition of olecranon fossa
Muscles: Triceps Brachii, Anconeus
Describe supination of the forearm
- Plane/axis
- range + limits
- muscles
Plane/axis: horizontal plane/vertical axis
Range: 90 degrees
limits: interosseous membrane (oblique cord) + anterior radioulnar ligament
Muscles: Biceps brachii + supinator
- Brachioradialis will supinate a pronated forearm to neutral
Describe pronation of the forearm
Plane/axis: horizontal plane/vertical axis
Range: 80 degrees
limits: bony approximation of radius on ulna
Muscles: Pronator teres + prontator quadratus
- brachioradialis will pronate a fully supinated forearm back to neutral
