A type of offensive operation designed to develop the situation and to establish or regain contact. Characterized by:
Uncertain enemy situation, Time compressed.
Seeks initial contact with smallest necessary force to avoid decisive contact until the commander chooses

When do we use approach march?
Used when enemy location is generally known from recent activity along an axis of advance
when do we use search and attack?
Deny enemy use of a certain area or when the enemy is operating in small dispersed elements whose presence in an area is known but no location is evident
