movement of water through plants Flashcards
what is plasmodesmata
gaps in the cell wall contain cytoplasm which connects two cells
what is the apoplast pathway
water passes through the spaces in the cell walls and between the cells no movement through any plasma membrane.
what type of movement does water do in the apoplast pathway
Water will move by mass flow rather than osmosis
what is the symplast pathway
water enters the cell cytoplasm through the plasma membrane .
can then pass through the plasmodesmata from one cell to another
what is the vacuolar pathway
water isnt confine to the cytoplasm and is able to enter plant vacuoles
what is the casparian strip
waxy band of suberin which blocks the apoplast pathway and is an impassable barrier to water
what pathway does the casparian strip force water to take
Water from the symplast pathway will be forced into the apoplast pathway
how does water move through the symplast pathway
osmosis
what is the definition of water loss
measure of the tendency of water to move from one region to another
what is the name given to a plant in a lower water potential (salt solution)
Plasmolysis
Tissue is flaccid
vacuole shrink
cytoplasm shrinks
what is the name given to a plant which is placed in a solution with a high water potential
Turgid
High turgor pressure
doesnt burst due to strong cellulose wall
in which direction will water travel in two cells which are touching each other
water will travel from the cell with the highest water potential to the cell with the lowest potential
