Movement of Substances Flashcards
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region where they are of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, that is, down a concentration gradient.
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the net movement of water molecules from a solution of higher water potential to a solution of lower water potential, through a partially permeable membrane.
What happens when a lot of water enter a plant cell?
When a lot of water enters a plant cell through osmosis, the cell expands and becomes turgid→Cell wall prevents from bursting
What happens when a lot of water leaves a plant cell?
When water leaves a plant cell through osmosis, cytoplasm shrinks away from the cell wall and the cell becomes plasmolysed→Cell becomes flaccid.
What happens when a lot of water enters an animal cell?
When a lot of water enters an animal cell, the cell expands and bursts.
What happens when a lot water leaves an animal cell?
When water leaves an animal cell, the cell shrinks in size and becomes crenated.
What is the importance of turgor in plants?
Turgor plays an important role in maintaining the shape of soft tissues in plant cell
It keeps plants firm and upright.
Loss of turgidity causes the plant to wilt.
Turgor helps in the opening and closing of stomata.
What is active transport?
Active transport is the process in which energy is used to move the particles of a substance across a membrane against its concentration gradient, that is, from a region where the particles are of lower concentration to a region where they are of higher concentration.
