What do phytoplankton (as well asterrestrial plants/algae/bacteria) do?
A
When in the euphotic (sunlit zone) zone of the ocean they turn carbon into organic matter.

Where do they get energy from?
A
Sunlight.
Used to combine carbon dioxide from atmosphere with water to form carbohydrates and oxygen as a by product.

What is the role of the carbohydrates?
A
To store energy.
