What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
What is osmosis?
The movement of water molecules from a high to low water concentration via a semi permeable membranes
What is active transport?
The movement of particles from a low to high concentration using ATP
How does increasing the surface area affect the rate of diffusion?
More surface is available for substances to diffuse across e.g. oxygen in gas exchange
How does decreasing the diffusion pathway affect the rate of diffusion?
Less distance for substances to diffuse
How does increasing the concentration gradient affect the rate of diffusion?
Greater difference in number of particles on each side of a membrane so reaches the equilibrium faster
How does increasing the temperature affect the rate of diffusion?
Particles have more kinetic energy so vibrate/move more so move faster
