Flexion
The act of bending a joint such that the joint angle decreases (Hand to face)
Extension
The act of straightening a joint such that the joint angle increases (Hand away from face)
Abduction
Occurs when a body segment is moved to the side away from the body
Adduction
Occurs when a body segment is moved back to the side of the body
Supination
Specific to the wrist, occurs when palm of hand is facing upwards
Pronation
Specific to the wrist, occurs when palm of hand is facing downwards
Plantar Flexion
Specific to the ankle joint, occurs when toes are in pointed position
Dorsiflexsion
Specific to the ankle joint, occurs when ankle joint is bent so that the toes are closer to shin
Inversion
Associated with the ankle joint, is a result of standing on the outer edge of foot
Eversion
Associated with the ankle joint, is a result of standing on the inside edge of foot
External Rotation
Results when a body part is twisted or turned away from the midline
Internal Rotation
Results when a body part is twisted or turned inward to the midline
Circumduction
Combines flexion, extension, abduction and adduction. Occurs when a body part makes a full circular movement
Elevation
Movement in an upward direction
Depression
Movement in a downward direction
