Movement In And Out Of Cells Flashcards
Diffusion
The net movement of molecules or ions from a region of higher concentration to lower concentration down a concentration gradient
Factors that affect the rate of diffusion
Size of molecule
Distance (less=quicker)
Surface area (more=quicker)
Temperature (higher=quicker)
Concentration gradient (increases=quicker)
Osmosis
The diffusion of water molecules from a dilute solution into a more concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane down a water potential
If a cells is turgid:
Inflated with water
When the cells take up water by osmosis they swell but the cell wall prevents them from bursting. Become turgid when put in a dilute solution
Plasmolysed
Has lost water causing the cell membrane to be pulled away from the cell wall
Flaccid
A plant cell that is limp through a reduction of pressure inside the cell
Active transport
The movement of ions or molecules across a cell membrane from a lower to a higher concentration
