Movement Disorders Flashcards

1
Q

A

Dopaminergic pathway is compromised, and the cholinergic system operates unopposed.

Therefore, goal of tx is to either enhance dopamine’s influence or to inhibit ACh’s influence

Q

Tx of Parkinson Disease

A
  1. Carbidopa-Levodopa (Sinemet)
  2. Dopamine-R agonists (bromocriptine, pramipexole)
  3. Selegine–it inhibits MAO-B activity
  4. Amantadine (antiviral)–mild benefit, mostly for. early or mild disease
  5. Anticholinergic drugs
    1. Trihexyphenidyl and benztropine
  6. Amitriptyline–useful in tx as anticholinergic agent and as antidepressant
  7. Surgery (DBS)

Q

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP)

A

Degenerative condition of the brainstem, basal ganglia, and cerebellum, most commonly affecting middle-aged and elderly men

Unlike Parkinson disease, PSP:

does NOT cause tremor

dose cause ophthalmoplegia

Q

Huntington Chorea

Cause?

A
