Lapita Culture
Settlers in New Guinea created the Lapita system and culture around 1600 B.C.

- One of the world’s largest trading spheres
- based on trading pottery and obsidian, there was a lack of metals on the islands
Greek/Mycenean/Mesopotamian city differences
- In Greek city-states, voters knew the leaders they elected, Mesopotamian government was separated from citizens
- Mycenean and Mesopotamian cities included a palace as the center of power, Greeks did not.
- Greek cities had an open space in the city center for general assemblies

- invented the outrigger sailing canoe
- extensive navigational information and mental maps, memorized currents and island locations - Hearty root vegetables like Yams and Taro could be grown and stored for long voyages
