-conjunct and diatonic (typical of a hymn tune) with only very occasional leaps
-SATB narrow range (sop+alto 8th, tenor 13th, bass 10th)
structure/tonality
-bars 1-4: 2 two-bar phrases repeated. Brief modulation to A major at the end of the first phrase before returning to the tonic (D major)
-bars 5-12: section consisting of five phrases. Starts in D major with brief modulations to A major, after a perfect cadence it returns to the tonic. Near the end it moves through G major in E minor
harmony
-chords are diatonic and functional
-frequent perfect cadences
-rare imperfect cadence in bar 14
