How do you mount the appliance safely?
1) Use door on safe side of appliance
2) Be award doorhandles, hinges vary
3) make sure there is room to open door fully without causing obstruction
4) use grab handles to pull yourself up
5) once seated make sure no one is following you through same door and pull it closed
6) check catch by pushing door carefully to make sure it doesn’t swing open
What are the key en route safety points?
1) no loose/unsecured items of equipment in crew cab
2) must wear seat belts
3) seat belts checked at start of shift
4) defect reported to WM and driver
5) PPE on prior to appliance moving off (without causing delay)
6) seat belts stay on until appliance is stationary
What do you do when dismounting?
1) Always use safe side ( away from traffic)
2) be aware of cyclists, pedestrians etc
3) check ground is safe
4) open door fully and dismount backwards using steps and handles (never jump)
5) always close door, check no one following through same door
What should the driver do when reversing the appliance?
1) ensure attendants are placed in best position to view area it’s going to and able to give clear instructions
2) wind door windows down and ensure instruction can be heard
3) be Able to see attendants at all times
4) not reverse until indicated to do so
5) reverse no faster than walking pace
6) through restricted openings in a straight line
What should attendants do during reversing?
1) wear hi-vis
2) stand 5-10 metres back and 1 metre our from side of vehicle
3) must use clear standard signals, never walking backwards
4) positioned so can be heard and seen, if loses sight of mirror must shout STOP
5) stop traffic and pedestrians
What must be observed when an appliance is crewed by one person?
1) should not be reversed on LFB premises without attendant present
2) anticipate where your driving the vehicle and try not to drive into a position you will have to reverse out of
3) if must reverse, physically check behind vehicle before reversing
What hand signals are used by attendants while reversing the appliance?
1) stop
2) danger
3) move to attendants right
4) move to attendants left
5) move towards attendant
6) move away
7) horizontal distance
