More than one million people live within 10km radius of the summit, putting them at constant risk

Farmers favour the soil as it is highly fertile

-therefore people do not adhere to evacuation warnings and chose to stay in the area which exacerbated the death toll

Positive impacts
-ash from the volcano will eventually lead to more fertile soils in the area
-a conservation area has been set up around the volcano where it is unsafe to live
Negative impacts
-353 people were killed, 176 died on the spot from pyroclastic flows
-577 people were injured with many suffered severe burns and chronic respiratory problems
-360,000 people were displaced from their homes
-people particularly farmers lost their homes and livelihoods
-evacuation centres were over crowded
-tourists will be put off visiting the location, which will affect the local economy
Short term
-210 evacuation centres were set up in schools, churches, stadiums and government offices
-an exclusion zone of 20km was established around the volcano
-international aid was offered from governments and non-governmental organisations such as Red Cross
Long term
-2,682 people were moved to safer, new houses permanently
-government made money available to farmers to help replace their livestock
-rebuilding infrastructure, roads, railways and reconstructing water supplies
