Q

Why is the Khumbu Icefall the most dangerous part of the climb?

A

The Khumbu Icefall is the most dangerous part of the climb up Mt. Everest because people get crushed by shifting seracs. Another reason why is because people fall in the crevasses that are too deep to climb back up. Finally, people get carried away by avalanches when there is too much noise.

Q

How does the physical geography change from Camp 1 to Camp 4?

A

When climbers leave Camp 1 to go to Camp 2 they enter the Western Cwm. Ridges on either side of the valley block the wind and make it hot during the climb through the valley. Once climbers reach Camp 2 they start their climb to Camp 3. Camp 2 lies at the base of Lhotse Face. Lhotse Face is a ice-covered wall that rises up 3,700 feet. Camp 3 is perched on a narrow ledge halfway up Lhotse Face. Once climbers have reached Camp 3 they start their climb to Camp 4. During the climb to Camp 4 climbers ascend another 1,500 feet to the South Col. The South Col is a saddle between the face and the summit. Once climbers have reached Camp 4 they are in the Deathzone.
