March 1983- lasted 131 days, lava threatened property, earthworks used to redirect lava
Dec 1991-1993- lasted 473 days, largest volume of lava in hundreds of years so earth dam built, explosives used to divert lava with human made channel
Oct 2002- threatened village, airport closed due to ash fall
Dec 2015- sulphur plumes drift to Egypt and Iran (irritate skin and respiratory system) , airport closed again
