In 1959 African American Berry Gordy founded Motown Records in Detroit and through an influence of Gospel, Rhythm and Blues and Jazz created and refined the
Motown sound that would not only make a mark on the music industry but help bring together a racially divided and segregated American society.

Motown was the first label to have all female groups. Its success would influence major artists like The Beatles and Rolling Stones while also whole genres, including disco, hip hop, modern R & B, funk and pop music.
