Motorcycle Rules Flashcards
What is lane filtering and what speed can you travel at when doing so?
Lane filtering is riding at low speed between stationary or slow-moving traffic travelling
in the same direction as you. You can only lane filter if it’s safe to do so, you’re riding at
30km/hr or less, and you hold an open licence for the motorcycle you’re riding.
When can’t you lane filter?
You cannot lane filter:
• At a speed of more than 30km/hr.
• Between a vehicle and the kerb.
• In school zones during school zone hours.
• If you hold a learner or provisional licence.
What is edge filtering?
Edge filtering is riding at low speed on road shoulders or in emergency stopping lanes past
stationary or slow-moving traffic. You can only edge filter if it’s safe to do so, you’re riding
at 30km/hr or less, and you hold an open licence for the motorcycle you’re riding
When can’t you edge filter?
You cannot edge filter:
• At a speed of more than 30km/hr.
• On roads with a speed limit less than 90km/hr.
• On an unsealed part of the road.
• If you hold a learner or provisional licence.
How should you park a motorcycle?
When parking you should position the motorcycle so at least one wheel is as close as
possible to the kerb or side of the road.
What are the seven types of bikes?
- Naked/standard
- Sports
- Crusier
- Road/Trail
- Tourer
- Moped
- Trike
Explain what the throttle does and where is it located on the bike?
Located on the right side of the handlebars, it controls the flow of fuel going to the engine — more fuel increases your speed.
Explain what the front brake lever does and where is it located on the bike?
Located in front of the grip on the right side of the handlebars, it applies brakes to the front wheel. The front brake is the primary stopping brake, providing the majority of the motorcycle’s braking performance. It is used with the rear brake when reducing speed.
Explain what the rear brake pedal does and where is it located on the bike?
Located in front of the right footrest, it applies brakes to the rear wheel. The rear brake is used with the front brake when reducing speed to stabilise the motorcycle and on its own when manoeuvring at a walking pace to aid control.
Explain what the clutch lever does and where is it located on the bike?
Located in front of the grip on the left side of the handlebars, it connects and disconnects the drive from the engine to the rear wheel.
Explain what the gear lever does and where is it located on the bike?
Located in front of the left footrest, it is used to select your gear; lift up to
change up, press down to change down.
Explain what the starter does and where is it located on the bike?
Generally located on the right side switch block on the handlebars, this button starts the engine.
Explain what the kill switch does and where is it located on the bike?
Located on the right side of the handlebars, it cuts
power to the engine.
Explain what the ignition does and where is it located on the bike?
Generally located on or near the centre of the handlebars, it must be in the ON position to start the engine.
Explain what the Low/high beam does and where is it located on the bike?
Generally located on the left side switch block on the handlebars (some motorcycles have a separate flash button to activate high beam), and is operated with the left thumb.
