Q

ASSOCIATED SPEECH CHANGES: RESPIRATION

A
  • Reduced overall loudness
  • Loudness decay- start off yelling and then gets really quiet
  • Excessive loudness variation

Q

TREATMENT: RESPIRATION-

A
  • Postural adjustments
  • External supports:
  • Inspiratory Muscle training: Belling breathing, Discourage excess use of accessory muscles.
  • Controlled Expiration (inspiratory Checking)
  • Expiratory Muscle Strength Training (EMST)
  • Phrase Grouping: targets strategic pauses for inhalation.

Q

TREATMENT: RESONANCE-

A
  • Velopharyngeal Exercise- non-speech exercise (ex; Horn-blowing, straw-sucking) however, no evidence for carryover to speech tasks.
  • Speech-Based Resonatory Treatment- emphasis of appropriate oral and/or nasal resonance.
  • Prosthetic Management: Palatal lift- lifts the velum. You put it in like dentures

Q

TREATMENT: PHONATION-

A
  • Reducing Laryngeal strain- circolaryngeal massage, these pts. Need to relax to relieve that tension on the throat, to begin with.
  • Laryngeal exercise: push-pull, grunt, cough, pitch glides, pitch matching.
  • Coordination respiration and phonation:
  • Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT): this targets respiratory, articulatory, laryngeal, prosodic subsystems.

Q

TREATMENT: ARTICULATION-

A
  • Overarticulation
  • Alternative place/manner/voicing
  • Coordination of complex phonetic sequencing
  • Have a mirror so they can get that bio-feedback
  • Supporting Articulatory Function- Velopharyngeal support, jaw support (bite block), sensory tricks, stretching/massage.
  • See the sound-visual phonics (visual phonics)
  • Gesture and symbol-based cueing system.

Q

TREATMENT: PROSODY-

A
  • Work on speaking rate
  • Pacing board/Hand tapping
  • Stopping briefly between each word, not a syllable.
  • Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF)
