Motor control Flashcards
definition of motor control
ability to regulate / direct mechanisms essential for movement
Summary of motor control
- how cns manages to control many muscles and joints to perform movement
- how sensory info from environment is used to select and control appropriate movement
In order to have skilled Motor control, what do humans need to do
- motor learning
what is motor learning
relatively permanent change in capability to perform motor activity
What is the process of motor learning (baby learning to walk)
1) experience (attempts movement)
2) rehearsal (repeats)
3) maintain movement and carry over
what is a retention test
used to evaluate if learned skill has been retained eg. baby walking two days in a row
what is a transfer test
used to evaluate if learned skills have element carried over into new but similar movements eg. 10 metre archery instead of 5 metre archery
what are the 3 stages of motor learning
cognitive
associative
autonomous
cognitive stage of motor learning
1st stage
- stage of gathering information
- requires cognitive effort and attention
- understanding how to do the motor task
- lots of mistakes but large gains
associative stage of motor learning
2nd stage
- understand what is required and what actions need to be done; but need to put them together repeatedly
- lots of practice
- conscious effort
autonomous stage of motor learning
3rd final stage
- achieved after much practice
- unconscious, smooth, auto movement
human movement is a product of what
interaction between individual, task and environment
task
nature of the task
- determine what aspects of motor system are involved and how movement will be regulated and coordinated
environment
characteristic of environment
- regulatory and non-regulatory aspects
regulatory aspects in environment
objects in environment
- variable
