Motives and motivations Flashcards
what is motives
our needs wants desire that lead to a goal directed behaviour
what is motivation
the internal and external motives that cause us to behave in a specific way
what are some positive and negative motivation
positive ( seeking)
ex- challenged
interested
make someone happy ect
neg( avoiding)
- social pressure
- save face
- bored
- stress
what are the 3 motivational theories
- drive theory
- incentive theory
- evolutionary theory
what is drive theory
seeking homeostasis ( balance )
what is drive reduction theory
part of drive theory
- psychological need creates a state of tension ( a drive) that motivates the organism to satify the need
drive theory need vs drive
need- a deprivation that energizes the need to eliminate or reduce the deprivation
ex - food water sleep
drive - an internal state of tension because of a physiological need
ex - hunger thirst tiredness
what is incentive theories
regulation by EXTERNAL stimuli
what is incentive
positive or negatice goal with capacity to motivate behaviour
ex - A+ gold star, money, attention, guilt
what is the diffrence between extrinsc vs intrinsic motivation
extrinsic motivation a desire to to perform a behaviout because of promised reward ( or threat of punishment)
instrinsic motivation - a desire to perfrom a behaviour for its own sake
the difference between drive theories adn incentive theories
drive theories- PUSHED by our INTERNAL needs to reduce drive
incentive therories - PULLED by our EXTERNAL incentives that lure or repel us
what is the evolutionary theories in motivation
motivation works to maximize reproductive success
- need to pass genes
- only genes that promote survival of the species are preserved in the gene pool
in the evolutionary theories what is natural selection
favours behaviours that maximize reproductive success
behaviours we see today reflect natural selection
what are some motivational factors of eating and hunger biological factor
brain regulation areas of the hypothalamus glucose and digestive regualtion decreases in blood gluose hormal regulation increased inulin- more hungry leptin( appetite suppressor) secrete ghrelin( appetite stimulator) stomach signals brain( satiety) secretes CCK( appetite suppressor)
what are some motivational factors of eating and hunger environmental factor
- learned and preferences and habits
- anticipated pleasure
- food related cues
- stress
- variety
- social
