motivational theorys Flashcards
What was TAYLOR’S approach and how did he say workers were paid?
scientific approach (same approach can be replicated) and workers are paid via piece rate
what are the disadvantages of TAYLORS theory?
- outdated
- dont take into account psychological factors
- not suitable for tertiary sector jobs
What were the key factors MAYO said employees must have to be motivated?
- a sense of RECOGNITION is important to employees
- the workplace is a SOCIAL system and people like to work in groups.
- COMMUNICATION management impacts productvity
- employees respond to changes in working ENVIRONMENT.

- AFFILIATION (belonging to a group and wanting to be liked)
- POWER (wants to control others, likes to win a argument)
what does mc clelland say about every employee will have…
1 dominant need, and is important for a manger to identify needs because individualised can be set in order to meet individual needs.
how would you motivate someone for each of MC CLELLANDS 3 needs?
power - most likely to be motivated by being promoted or giving them a training programme to be further qualified.
- affiliation needs - most likely someone by having social interactions with staff such as teamwork activities.
- achievement needs - motivation someone with achievement needs could come from giving them a task that takes a time to complete.
disadvantages of mc clellands 3 needs theroy
- they believe 1 employee will have 1 dominant need however some may be a combination.
- other employees may feel left out and may be difficult to meet the needs of all employees.
what are the 3 factors used to calculate VROOMS expectancy theory?
EXPECTANCY X INSTRUMENTALITY X VALENCE
what does each factor mean?
expectancy - employees make decisions based on what they expect to happen
instrumentality - belief that you will perform well and that a valued outcome will be received
valence - refers to the value they place on the reward on offer.
what are some disadvantages of VROOMS theory?
- placing values is subject to opinion
- employees on different jobs place values differently
- cost of financial rewards may be high
- -dosent work in all contexts such as tertiary because employees have lots of different responsibility.
what are the 2 factors concerned with HERZBERG’S theory?
- HYGIENE factors (factors such as pay and working conditons. the absence of them could cause dissatisfaction but employees are not motivated by them
- MOTIVATING factors are factors such as job enrichment, recognition and praise.
