what is PRP
A way of rewarding employees through monetary compensation when they perform their duties in a matter that equals or exceeds a set of predetermined goals or criteria.
advantages of PRP
- it’s a direct financial reward which improves performance
-predictable and easy to calculate rewards
-tangible way of recognising achievements, encouraging employees to work harder.
disadvantages of PRP
- others who haven’t out performed may expect the same reward, causing problems
- employees may feel unmotivated if rewards don’t increase overtime
- come employees aren’t motivated by money
PRP as short term motivator
immediate financial rewards encouraging employees to work harder for short term gains
PRP as a long term motivator
provides ongoing motivation if rewards are constantly available
Career advancement
Occurs when a person takes on job that carries greater responsibility or increases opportunities to provide leadership
advantages of CA
-retains valuable employees
-satisfies the 3 higher levels of mallows theory (love/belonging, self esteem, self actualisation)
- satisfies some drives of Lawrence and Nora’s theory (acquire, learn)
disadvantages of CA
-must create purposeful promotion positions
- encourages competitiveness due to limited number of promotions available
- employee may be promoted beyond their capacity
CA as a ST motivator
Employee gets a pay rise and has greater job security
CA as a LT motivator
Long-term retention, fulfilling esteem + self actualisation needs in Maslow’s hierarchy
Investment in training
The direction of finances, or resources such as time, into the teaching of skills to employees
advantages of IiT
-shows the business values employees which improves corporate culture
-benefits the business by up skilling employees which leads to increased productivity and effectiveness
-increased staff retention by creating a sense of loyalty and positive corporate culture
disadvantaged of IiT
-can be expensive
-wasteful if no career advancement opportunity arises
-employees may leave the business after training to another business

taking on training for immediate job satisfaction and access to better paying roles

Support
The assistance or services provided by the business to help employees cope with the difficulties that may impede their work performance. e.g counseling, mentoring

- doesn’t have to cost the business money
- support/encouragement positively influences attitudes and helps employees improve confidence
-helps employees develop meaningful professional relationships
disadvantages of support
-requires a business to have positive corporate culture
-may be difficult to find reasons to support/encourage some employees
-employees may become too dependent on support services provided
support as a short term motivator
helps employees feel valued in the business
support as a long term motivator
more employee engagement and support allows for long term loyalty and commitment to the business
sanction
a penalty or form of discipline imposed on an individual
advantages of sanction
-provides quick, short term motivation
-fear created by sanctions may bring under performing employees in line
disadvantages of sanction
- only a potential short term motivator
- reduces employees sense of belonging in the business and encourages manager resentment
-possibilities of disputes and legal action
