Motivation (Psychology) Flashcards
What are the two types of motivation?
- Extrinsic motivation
- Intrinsic motivation
What is motivation?
Motivation is defined as the external stimuli and internal mechanisms that arouse and direct our behaviour.
Extrinsic motivation
This comes from an outside source and is the drive we have to achieve external rewards.
- Intangible- such as praise from our coach
- Tangible- e.g. winning a trophy, badge or certificate
Intrinsic motivation
This is the drive from within and includes the pride and satisfaction we might experience if we have had a good game. Intrinsic motivation can be promoted by achieving personal goals, such as personal best in athletics.
Which type of motivation do you think is most important and why?
Intrinsic motivation is most important because:
- it gives performer a sense of control over performance
- Removal/failure to achieve an extrinsic reward may lead to loss of motivation and so…
- They are crucial for a performer to gain self satisfaction and create a desire to challenge themselves.
Excessive extrinsic rewards
- May damage/lead to loss of intrinsic motivation i.e. play only for the reward and not for the love of the game.
- Create too much pressure leading to cheating
- Lose their value if given too often
- If they are not achieved the performer could give up.
How could a coach motivate a performer?
- Variation in training
- Make it fun/enjoyable
- Allow success by grouping similar abilities together (eg handicap system)
- Set appropriate targets/goals SMARTER
- Use role models
- Avoid punishments on novices
- Praise and reinforcement (weaker p)
- Use external rewards/prizes
- Provide feedback/knowledge of results/knowledge of performance
