Opponent process theory
Explains addictive behaviors. Will eventually feel a motivation to return to our base line, neutral state
Motivation
A need or desire that energizes and directs behavior
Hierarchy of motives
Maslows pyramid of human needs. Once low level needs are satisfied, we can move on to satisfy the higher level needs
Optimum arousal theory
We need to experience outside stimulation. We’re curious because we want to be fully stimulated
Drive- reduction theory
The goal of these behaviors is homeostasis, pulled by incentives
Homeostasis
A tendency to maintain a balanced or contestant internal state
Instinct theory
Attributes all behavior to instinct. Behavior as a result of physiological needs and psychological wants
