Motivation And Emotion Flashcards
Opponent process theory
Explains addictive behaviors. Will eventually feel a motivation to return to our base line, neutral state
Motivation
A need or desire that energizes and directs behavior
Hierarchy of motives
Maslows pyramid of human needs. Once low level needs are satisfied, we can move on to satisfy the higher level needs
Optimum arousal theory
We need to experience outside stimulation. We’re curious because we want to be fully stimulated
Drive- reduction theory
The goal of these behaviors is homeostasis, pulled by incentives
Homeostasis
A tendency to maintain a balanced or contestant internal state
Instinct theory
Attributes all behavior to instinct. Behavior as a result of physiological needs and psychological wants
Level 1 on pyramid bottom
Physiological needs. Things you need to survive
2nd from bottom on pyramid
Safety

Esteem
Top of pyramid

Social facilitation
The presence of others amplifies our natural after a party or feast. We may realize we have overeaten
James Lange Theory
Stimulus
Bodily response
Emotion
What is James Lange Theory?
When experiencing emotion evoking stimulus, the ANS produces physical change that we experience as emotion
Cannon - Bard theory
Stimulus
Mental processing
Bodily response and emotion
What is the cannon bard theory?
External stimulus is processed by the brain which produces both the emotion and bodily response simultaneously
Schaffer and Singers two factor theory
Stimulus
Bodily reaction and cognitive appraisal
Emotion
What is scacter and singers two factor theory?
Two factors physiological arousal and who the brain interprets that arousal
Solomon’s opponent process theory
Stimulus
Emotion
Opposite emotion balance
What is Solomon’s opponent process theory?
When one emotion is strongly experienced the opposite is soon experienced to bring balance
