Theories on motivation
Instinct theory-focuses on genetically predisposed behaviors. instinct has adapted value
Drive reduction- motivated to achieve/maintain homeostasis (sleep,eat,drink). Pushed by our need to reduce drives, pulled by incentives
Arousal-driven to maintain arousal of the brain with exploring or right level of stimulation
Motivation
Need,want, desire that drives you to to something/behave in a certain way
Maslow hierarchy of needs
Physiological-water, food,sleep Safety- employment,health,family Love- friendship, intimacy Esteem-self,confidence, achievement Self actualization- live up to our fullest potential Self transcendence- caring for others Meaning of life
Motivation to eat
Biological
Lateral hypothalamus-increase eating
Ventrimedial-underside of brain,activated eating behavior decrease
Paraventricular nuclei- regulating blood sugar
Hormones
Increase appetite- increase in insulin,ghrelin (intestine,) galanin(fat craving,) neuropeptide y(hypothalamus)
Decrease appetite- increase in lepton, pancreatic polypeptide y (I’m not hungry signals to the brain), glycogen
Psychological reason for motivation for eating
Attitudes example-vegetarian
Habits-eating without realizing
Anorexia nervosa
Restriction of caloric intake,weight significantly low Stop or reduce eating Intense fear of becoming fat Starvation habits Distorted body image
Things that can happen to people with anorexia
No menstrual cycle Electrolyte imbalance Decrease in blood pressure and body temp. Poor circulation Fine like downy hair Depression anxiety
Bulimia nervosa
Binge purge syndrome
Uncontrollable eating followed by guilt. Compensatory behavior-purging
Little over normal weight. Can have digestion problems, tooth decay,organ damage,Russell’s sign-knuckles
Binge eating disorder
Eat but don’t purge. Equal among men and women. Weight gain
Treatment
Change ways of thinking by showing pictures of people with equal weight. Proper eating habits
Exercise control
Allow them to eat but no purging
Instinct
Complex behavior must have a fixed pattern throughout a species and be unlearned
Glucose
Form of sugar that circulates in the blood and provides the major source of energy for body tissues. When it is low we feel hunger
Achievement motivation
Desire for significant accomplishment for mastery of skills or ideas for control and for rapidly attaining a high standard
