Q

Why Fieldfisher?

A
  1. Technology sector expertise.

Enjoyed exploring the legal problems involving the transfer of digital assets in my dissertation, given the challenges its novelty and disruptive nature. Particularly drawn to the debate of whether cryptocurrency exchanges should be subject to the duties of a trustee.

Fieldfisher frequently advises distinguished clients on technology related matters, including LVMH and National Bank of Kuwait.

Also grown a substantial presence in Silicon Valley and among deep tech VCs, evident by its recent work.

Therefore practising at Fieldfisher will place me at the forefront of exciting developments in emerging technologies.

  1. Strengths in capital markets.

First became interested whilst designing content on financing at FCL.

Interest grew at Travers and W&C as I learnt more about the role of a capital markets lawyer - structuring offerings to minimise company volatility.

Chambers and Legal 500 consistently rank Fieldfisher’s cap marks department highly.

Also home to prominent cap marks lawyers with considerable experience in structured derivative transactions and complex AIM listings in the energy, life sciences and technology sectors, such as Guy Usher and Dominic Gurney-Champion.

Accordingly, training here will enable me to work alongside market leading lawyers on stimulating mandates to develop my understanding of this practice.

  1. International capabilities.

Enjoyed studying Int Commercial Arbitration as it enabled be to explore global trade and commerce through a legal lens.

Found the fact that arbitration being supported by various international treaties and national systems means that any dispute requires reference to multiple national legal systems.

Likewise working at a truly global law firm, such as Fieldfisher, with over 20 offices across the world, will provide a comparably exciting opportunity to explore multiple legal jurisdictions and business cultures.

Moreover, Fieldfisher offers international secondments to key hubs including Berlin, Silicon Valley and Vienna.

As such, a career at Fieldfisher will provide me with the optimal environment to grow into a global minded lawyer.

Q

Why commercial law and not investment banking or consultancy?

A

Bankers handle the financial aspects of a deal along with strategic aspects which is linked to the market.

Consultants also advise on strategic opportunities for a client.

A commercial lawyer, on the other hand, whilst advising on strategic aspects of a deal or case offers it through a legal lens. For example a corporate lawyer will likely advise a client on how to structure a deal - to adopt an asset purchase or share purchase.

For me, I am really drawn to how a commercial lawyer is viewed as both a business and legal advisor. I enjoy both aspects of business and the law.

In terms of business, I’m drawn to financial markets and how they operate. With the law, I enjoy the problem solving and analytical aspects of it.

Accordingly, a career in commercial law really offers me the best of both worlds.
