WHAT IS MOTIVATION?
Motivation is the reason why employees want to work hard and work effectively for the business
WHAT ARE REASONS WHY PEOPLE WORK?
state atleast 3 and explain briefly
People work for several reasons:
1) Have a better standard of living: by earning incomes they can satisfy their needs and wants
2) Be secure: having a job means they can always maintain or grow that standard of living
3) Gain experience and status: work allows people to get better at the job they do and earn a reputable status in society
4) Have job satisfaction: people also work for the satisfaction of having a job
state fredrick taylors theory
Taylor based his ideas on the assumption that workers were motivated by personal gains, mainly money and that increasing pay would increase productivity.
explain Maslows theory?
1) self-actualisation:achieving ones full potnetial, feeling
that you’ve done a good job.
2)Esteem needs:having status,, recognition, achievement,, independence
3)Social needs: friendship, a sense of being in a team
4)Safety, Security needs: protection against danger,, poverty
5)Physiocological needs: food, shelter, water and rest
State Herzbergs theory
Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory: Frederick Herzberg’s two-factor theory, wherein he states that people have two sets of needs:
‘hygiene factors’: status security work conditions company policies and administration relationship with superiors relationship with subordinates salary
‘motivators’: achievement recognition personal growth/development promotion work itself Advertisements
What are the types of financial motivators? at least 5

What is wage and describe the two types(including disadvantages and advantages
Wages: payment for work, usually paid weekly.
Advantages:
-Paid regularly
-Work longer, pay overtime (OT)
Disadvantages:
- Paid weekly, have to be calculated every week
- Employ wages clerk
Time-Rate: pay based on the number of hours worked.
Advantages:
1) Easy to calculate
Disadvantages:
1) Needs to record on time-sheet.
2) Good and bad workers get same pay.
3) Supervisor needs to monitor workers.
4) A clocking-in system is needed.
Piece-Rate: pay based on the no. of output produced. Advantages:
1) Encourages workers to work faster.
Disadvantages:
1)May ignore the quality of products.
2)Workers who are careful will not earn as much.
3)Conflict among workers will happen.
4)If machinery breaks down, employee will earn less
money.
what is perfomance-related pay and share ownership?
Performance-related pay is pay which is related to
the effectiveness of the employee where their
output can easily be measured.
Share ownership is where shares in the company
are given to employees so that they become part
owners in the company.
What is salary and commission?
A salary is payment for work, usually paid
monthly.
Commission: paid to salesperson, based on a percentage of sales they’ve made. The higher the sales, the more the pay. Although this will encourage salespersons to sell more products and increase profits, it can be very stressful for them because no sales made means no pay at all.
What is bonus and profit-sharing?
Bonus: additional amount paid to workers for good work
Profit-sharing: a scheme whereby a proportion of the company’s profits is distributed to workers. Workers will be motivated to work better so that a higher profit is made.
What are advantages and disadvantages of salary?
Advantages:
1) It is paid for the job monthly basis
Disadvantages:
1) Extra work will not usually be paid for.
2) It is fixed amount.
What are fringe benefits and list atleast 3 examples.
Fringe benefits are non-financial rewards given to employees.Examples:
1) Company vehicle/car
2) Free healthcare
3) Children’s education fees paid for
4) Free accommodation
5) Free holidays/trips
6) Discounts on the firm’s products
What is job satisfaction?
the enjoyment derived from the feeling that you’ve done a good job
What is job rotation?
Job Rotation: involves workers swapping around jobs and doing each specific task for only a limited time and then changing round again.
What is job enlargement?
Job Enlargement: where extra tasks of similar level of work are added to a worker’s job description. These extra tasks will not add greater responsibility or work for the employee, but make work more interesting.
