What is motivation?
The ways in which our actions are aroused, maintained, and guided
What are the three different type of motives?
Biological motives
- Based on biological needs that must be met for survival
Stimulus motives
- Express our needs for stimulation and information
Learned motives
- Based on learned needs, drives, and goals
Which are the basic needs and growth needs in the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs?
Basic needs (first 4 levels):
- Physiological needs
- Safety and security needs
- Love and belonging needs
- Esteem and self-esteem needs
Growth needs (top of hierarchy): - Self-actualization needs
Define basic needs.
Basic Needs are deficiency motives, i.e. activated by a lack of basic needs
Define growth needs.
Expressed as a need for self-actualization (full use of personal potential)
Positive, life-enhancing force for personal growth
Self-actualization as expressed through meta needs:
wholeness, perfection, completion, justice, richness, simplicity, aliveness, beauty, goodness, uniqueness, playfulness, truth, autonomy, meaningfulness

- Desire to become the most that one can be
- Pursue inner talent, creativity, fulfillment
