Motion Test Study Questions Flashcards
Reference Point
A place or object used for comparison to determine if an object is in motion
Motion
When an object’s distance is changing
Meter
The metric unit to measure length
Speed
The rate at which an object is moving
Speed=distance divided by time
Average Speed
TOTAL distance divided by TOTAL time; includes stops, increase, or decrease in speed
Instantaneous Speed
The rate at which an object is moving at a given INSTANT
Velocity
Speed in a given direction; a direction of motion MUST be included with velocity
Ex. 50m/sec. NORTH
Slope
Represents average speed on a graph
Acceleration
Is written in m/s/s or m/s2
Vf-Vi divided by time
What is the difference between speed and velocity?
Speed is the rate at which something is moving and velocity is speed in a given direction
Magic Triangle
Distance divided by speed =time
Distance divided time = speed
Speed x Time=distance
Time x Speed= distance
On a distance vs. time graph, if the line is horizontal, describe the motion of the object.
The object isn’t moving at all.
What must the graphs look like?
They must have curving up or down lines.
What is negative acceleration?
Slowing down or deceleration
Is something traveling in a circular motion accelerating even though its speed is changing? Why of why not?
No because it depends if the object is accelerating, decelerating, or staying at a constant speed.
