Motion And Mechanisms Flashcards
What are the four types of motion?
Linear
Reciprocating
Rotary
Oscillating
What is linear motion?
A straight line like a bullet
What is reciprocating motion?
Back and forth like a coping saw
What is rotary motion?
Around in a circle like a ferris wheel
What is oscillating motion?
Back and forth from a point above. Eg. A swing
What are gears?
Gears are wheels with teeth that transmit rotary motion.
What is a gear train?
It is when two or more gears mesh.
What are the two types of gear train?
Simple
Compound
What is the rack and pinion mechanism?
This converts rotary motion into linear motion and can be found in the workshop on the drill. A rack and pinion is used to move the table up and down.
What is the worm and wheel mechanism?
This is usually on an electric mortar. The worm is made up of one big spiral. One rotation of the worm means the wheel moves by one tooth.
What are bevel gears?
These are come shaped and can be found in the workshop on the hand drill. The cone shape or bevel allows them to transmit option through right angles. (90°)
