Motion And Forces Book Flashcards
A push or pull, something that changes the motion of an objects.
Force
A scientific law that states that an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force and an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
Newtons First Law
An overall force acting on an object.
Net Force
When 2 or more objects are pushing on another object with the same amount of force.
Balanced Force
When one object is pushing on another object with more force than the other.
Unbalanced Force
The resistance of an object to a change in speed or direction of its motion.
Inertia
A scientific law that states that the acceleration of an object increases with increased force and vise versa.
Newtons Second Law
Any force that keeps an object moving in a circle.
Centripetal Force
A scientific law that states that every time one object exerts a force on another, the second object exerts a force that is same in size but in the opposite direction.
Newtons Third Law
The force that objects exert on each other because of their masses.
Gravity
A measure of how much matter an object takes up and is made of.
Mass
The force of gravity on an object.
Weight
The rate at which velocity changes over time.
Acceleration
The elliptical path one celestial body follows around another.
Orbit
The spinning of a celestial body.
Rotation
A force that resists the motion between two surfaces in contact.
Friction
A substance that can flow easily.
Fluid
The fluid friction due to air.
Air Resistance
The physical property of matter that causes it to experience a force when placed in an electromagnetic field.
Electric Charge
A region around a charged particle or object within which a force would be exerted on other charged particles or objects.
Electric Field
An imbalance of electric charges within or on the surface of a material.
Static Charge
The process or action of bringing about or giving rise to something.
Induction
A piece of iron that has its component atoms so ordered that the material exhibits properties of magnetism, such as attracting other iron-containing objects or aligning itself in an external magnetic field.
Magnet
The force exerted by a magnet.
Magnetism
One of 2 ends of a magnet where the magnetic force is strongest.
Magnetic Pole
An area surrounding a magnet within which the magnet can exert a force.
Magnetic Field
A group of atoms whose magnetic fields align or point in the same direction.
Magnet Domain
Magnetism that results from the flow of electric charge.
Electromagnetism
A magnet that consists of a piece of iron or steel inside a coil of current-carrying wire.
