Motion And Forces Flashcards
A location to which another location is compared
Reference point
An objects location
Position
A change of position over time
Motion
A measure of how fast something moves through a particular distance over a definite time period
Speed
A speed in a specific direction
Velocity
A quantity that has both size and direction
Vector
That rate at which velocity changes over time
Acceleration
A push or pull; something that changes the motion of an object
Force
The overall force acting on an object when all of the forces acting on it are combined
Net force
Objects at rest remain at rest and objects in motion remain in motion with the same velocity unless acted on by an unbalanced force
Newton’s first law
The resistance of an object to change in the speed or the direction of its motion
Inertia
The acceleration of an object increases with an increased force and decreases with an increased mass
Newton’s second law
Any force that keeps an object moving in a circle
Centripetal
Every time one object exerts a force of another object, the second object exerts a force that is equal in size and opposite in direction back on the first object
Newton’s third law
