motion and forces Flashcards
what is a vector and what are 3 examples?
something that has a magnitude and direction e.g. velocity, displacement, acceleration
what is a scalar and what are 3 examples?
something that has just a magnitude e.g. speed, distance, time
in a displacement tine graph, what does a horizontal line show?
the object is stationary
in a velocity time graph, what does a horizontal line show?
shows the object is at a constant speed
what is the typical speed when walking?
5km/h
what is the typical speed when cycling?
15km/h
what is newton’s first law?
an object will remain at a constant velocity unless acted on by a resultant force
what is newton’s second law?
the greater the force applied, the greater the acceleration
the greater the mass, the more force needed to apply
what is newton’s third law?
every force has an opposite force acting on it
what is the ruler drop test?
- someone holds a ruler just above the other persons open hand
- they drop it at a random time
- record the distance on the ruler and repeat
which things affect your thinking distance?
- speed
- tiredness
- drugs/alcohol
- distractions
which things affect your breaking distance?
- speed
- road conditions
- tire conditions
- brake pads
