Motion Flashcards
Is distance a scalar or vector quantity?
Scaler
because it doesn’t involve direction
Is displacement a scalar or vector quantity
Vector
because it measures the distance and direction in a straight line from an objects starting point to its finishing point
What is the difference between speed and velocity?
Speed is a Scalar (speed is how fast you are with no regard of the direction)
Velocity is a Vector (velocity is a speed given direction)
Show a calculation you can use if you want to measure the speed of an object thats moving with a constant speed?
distance travelled (m)= speed(m/s) x time(s) s = vt (When there isn't a constant speed the formula gives the average((mean)) during that time)
What is the typical speed of a person walking?
1.5 m/s
What is the typical speed of a person running?
3 m/s
What is the typical speed of a person cycling?
6 m/s
What is the typical speed of a car?
25 m/s
What is the typical speed of a train?
30 m/s
What is the typical speed of a plane?
250 m/s
What is the equation you use to find the average acceleration of an object?
Acceleration(m/s²)= final velocity(m/s) - initial velocity(m/s) / time(s)
a= v-u / t
(If deceleration then its a negative number!)
What equation do you use to calculate constant (uniform) acceleration?
Final velocity(m/s) - initial velocity(m/s)= 2 x acceleration(m/s²) x distance(m) v²-u² = 2as
What do flat lines show in a distance-time graph?
Where its stationary
What do straight uphill sections show on a distance-time graph?
its accelerating at a steady speed
what does a steepening curve show on a distance-time graph?
its speeding up
