Motion Flashcards
What is speed?
The distance travelled each second
What does the gradient of a distance time graph show?
The speed of an object- the steeper the gradient, the greater the speed
If an object is stationary what does the line on a distance time graph look like?
The line is horizontal
If an object is at a constant speed what does the distance time graph look like?
A straight line which slopes upward
What is the speed of an runner who covers 400m in 50s?
8m/s
What is velocity?
The speed in a given direction
If the velocity of an object changes what do we say happens to the object?
We say it accelerates
What is the difference between speed and velocity?
Velocity is speed but in a given direction
If an object changes direction but the speed stays the same has the velocity changed?
Yes
What is the unit of acceleration?
M/S2
What does a velocity-time graph show?
The velocity of an object plotted against time
What does the gradient of a velocity-time graph represent?
The acceleration- steeper gradient= greater acceleration
If the line on a velocity time is horizontal what is the acceleration, and what does that there fore mean?
The acceleration is zero so the car travels at a constant velocity.
How do you find the distance travelled in a given time on a velocity-time graph?
Finding the area underneath the line
If the gradient of the line on a velocity- time graph is negative what does that mean about the velocity of the car?
It’s decelerating
If you calculate the gradient of the line on a distance time graph what will your answer represent?
The speed of an object
If you calculate the gradient of a velocity-time what will you answer represent?
The acceleration
If you calculate the area under a line on a velocity-time graph what does your answer represent?
The distance travelled between those times
What dies a distance-toile graph show?
Shows the speed of an object plotted against the time taken
If the line on a distance time graph is a curve what does that mean about the cars motion?
Accelerating
What is acceleration?
The rate of change of velocity in a given time
What is the unit of acceleration?
M/S2
What does a negative acceleration mean?
The car is decelerating or slowing down
A vehicle decelerates from 40 to 10m/s in 10s what is the deceleration of the vehicle?
10-40/10 -3m/s2
If you were given a distance time graph how would you calculate the maximum speed the car was travelling at?
Calculate the gradient at the steepest point of the line
On a velocity time graph what does a diagonal line straight line show?
Constant acceleration
How do you calculate the average speed onn a velocity time graph?
Total distance/ total time
What would a velocity time graph look like if the car changes direction?
Negative
