Motion Flashcards
What is speed?
The distance travelled each second
What does the gradient of a distance time graph show?
The speed of an object- the steeper the gradient, the greater the speed
If an object is stationary what does the line on a distance time graph look like?
The line is horizontal
If an object is at a constant speed what does the distance time graph look like?
A straight line which slopes upward
What is the speed of an runner who covers 400m in 50s?
8m/s
What is velocity?
The speed in a given direction
If the velocity of an object changes what do we say happens to the object?
We say it accelerates
What is the difference between speed and velocity?
Velocity is speed but in a given direction
If an object changes direction but the speed stays the same has the velocity changed?
Yes
What is the unit of acceleration?
M/S2
What does a velocity-time graph show?
The velocity of an object plotted against time
What does the gradient of a velocity-time graph represent?
The acceleration- steeper gradient= greater acceleration
If the line on a velocity time is horizontal what is the acceleration, and what does that there fore mean?
The acceleration is zero so the car travels at a constant velocity.
How do you find the distance travelled in a given time on a velocity-time graph?
Finding the area underneath the line
If the gradient of the line on a velocity- time graph is negative what does that mean about the velocity of the car?
It’s decelerating
