motion Flashcards
Distance:
an amount of space between two things or people.
Displacement:
the moving of something from its place or position.
Speed:
the rate at which someone or something is able to move or operate.
Average speed:
-the total distance traveled by the object in a particular time interval.
Instantaneous speed:
Instantaneous speed (v) = distance/ time
6-the speed of something in a given direction.
Velocity:
-a vehicle’s capacity to gain speed within a short time.
Acceleration:
strength or energy as an attribute of physical action or movement.
Force:
the sum of all the forces acting on an object
Net force:
forces of equal magnitude but are opposite in direction
Balanced forces:
equal in strength and opposite in direction resulting in no change in motion of an object.
Inertia:
a tendency to do nothing or to remain unchanged.
Newton’s second law of motion:
An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion remains in motion at constant speed and in a straight line unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
Static friction:
force that keeps an object at rest.
Friction:
-the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another.
Sliding friction:
What is sliding or rolling friction
Gravity:
the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass.
Air resistance:
the force acting on an object that is moving through air flowing in the opposite direction.
Weight:
Centripetal acceleration:
the property of the motion of an object traversing a circular path.
Centripetal force:
A centripetal force is a force that makes a body follow a curved path.
Newton’s third law of motion:
His third law states that for every action (force) in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Momentum:
he quantity of motion of a moving body, measured as a product of its mass and velocity.
