Motion Flashcards
How is average speed calculated?
Average speed = Total distance over total time
What is the difference between speed and velocity
Speed is the rate at which an object is moving along a path. Velocity is the rate and direction of object movements.
How is average velocity calculated?
Average velocity = Total distance (m) over Total time (s)
How can you determine velocity from a displacement-time graph?
The slope or gradient line. The line is equal to the velocity of the object.
Define acceleration
The rate of change of velocity per unit time.
State the equation for acceleration.
Acceleration = change in Velocity over change in Time
Is acceleration a vector or scalar quantity?
Vector Quantity
How can acceleration be deterined from a velocity-time graph?
The gradient of the line is equal to the acceleration of an object.
What type of motion can the suvat equation be used for?
Acceleration - Constant
What is meant by “free fall”?
Any motion of a body where gravity is the only force acting upon it.
What is the value of acceleration of free fall on earth?
9.81m/s-2
Define stopping distance.
Stopping distance is the distance that a driver needs in order to safely bring the vehile to a complete stop.
Define thinking distance.
The distance a vehicle travels in the time it takes for the drive to brake after realising they need to break.
Define braking distance.
Braking distnce is the distance a vehicle travels in the time after the driver has applied the brakes.
